2.1893 The 'Industrial Jacquerie' Revisited: Luddism and England's Industrial Revolution.
The aim of this paper is to outline the causes, objectives, and organization of the Luddite movement in the Industrial Revolution, and the spate of industrial warfare that it set off throughout England. In addition, it seeks to rethink the efficacy of the movement as it affected the Industrial Revolution by making a case - as Eric Hobsbawn has done so convincingly - for a fairer estimation of the Luddites as a force of coercion against their employers. The limited life-span of Luddism, along with its rapid and crushing defeat, has suggested that machine-breaking was a dismal failure. And in some ways, this is true. But this is only part of the story. This essay will highlight some of the tangible successes of this collective bargaining by riot and sabotage, and will also mention some of the values of the technique as they manifested themselves in contemporary working class conditions. 9 pgs. 26 f/c. 10b.

3.1994 The Industrial Retardation Debate.
Quite a bit of fuss has been made about the great British industrial retardation debate. To this day, we are not precisely sure what the most important issues of this debate are. Some commentators claim that Britain simply entered a stage of slower natural growth after 1870. This paper will look at the so-called period of industrial retardation in Britain that began circa 1870. The primary objective is to evaluate what exactly happened and whether or not it is worthy of its title. Was industrial retardation characteristic of the whole period, or was it sporadic and limited to certain years? This is but one of many questions that will guide the paper towards its conclusion. 11 pgs. 21 f/c. 8b.

4.2015 Social and Political Preconditions of the British Industrial Revolution.
This paper will argue that the Industrial Revolution came about in England, and not in other countries, in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. This paper will also argue that the British Industrial Revolution was not due to any particular virtue or inventive genius on the part of the British, but rather as the result of a combination of interweaving social factors. Individual agency is, of course, essential to any social or political change; but the combination of factors which contributed to the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain were so diverse that they could only have come together by chance. In large part, as will be argued, this is the reason why Britain, and not France or Germany, or China, experienced an Industrial Revolution at this time. All other Industrial Revolutions, it may be said, derived from this one. 9 pgs. 14 f/c. 2b.
